LINE GoGo! TwinBee (ライン ゴーゴー! ツインビー Rain GōGō! TsuinBī ), or simply GoGo! TwinBee, was a free-to-play infinite vertical scrolling shoot 'em up game developed by Dracolle Studio and published by Konami Digital Entertainment and Line Corporation (through their Line app) for iPhone OS and Android smartphones. It was released on May 20, 2013, exclusively in Japan, and it was online only. It is the sixteenth overall TwinBee game and the first shoot 'em up in the series released in 18 years.
The game servers were shut down on June 2, 2014 (along with some other LINE games), and this title is no longer playable.
Gameplay[]
LINE GoGo! TwinBee is a free-to-play infinite vertical scrolling shoot 'em up game. The player takes control of the bumblebee-shaped aircraft, TwinBee, and the objective is to defeat as many oncoming enemies as possible –including the occasional boss, which in this game only comes in the form or Dr. Warumon piloting the Parasol Poppins aircraft– and compete for a high score. The service counts with a weekly ranking scoreboard where players from all across the country can compete in.
The player's ship is controlled via touchscreen controls. It can only move left and right, while bullets are shot automatically. While there aren't any grounded enemies like in most other games from the series, the player can still make use of bombs which they can purchase at the shop. These are deployed by double-tapping the screen and unleash a powerful explosion that can deal with many enemies at once and greatly damage bosses.
Another difference from previous installments is that Bell Power-Ups are now notably rarer to find, mainly being encountered at fixed sections of a stage, and they now come encased in floating bubbles instead of the usual clouds. Collected bells will instantly upgrade the player's ship when collected, with the enhancement they give depending on their color (see list below). Shooting at a bell will change its color, allowing the player to select the power-up they desire. Bosses also drop lots of bells when defeated.
The main way the player can upgrade their ship in this game is by collecting coins, which most enemies drop when defeated. The player can exchange these coins at a shop menu where they can purchase up to three upgrades for that play session. Apart from firepower enhancements (such as double shots, larger shots, etc.), other types of passive power-ups can also be purchased, such as one that attracts nearby coins for easy collecting, extra lives, score combo boosters, etc. Collected coins (and other stats) are saved on the player's profile, allowing them to buy power-ups from the beginning on future play sessions.
The player also counts with a "Fever!" gauge meter, which fills up as enemies are defeated. Once the bar has completely filled up, a "Fever!" event will trigger, where TwinBee briefly becomes invincible and is launched forward at great speed for a short time, increasing considerably the traveled distance, and at the end, all onscreen enemies are destroyed, releasing their respective coins for the player to collect.
The game also implements a distance counter which constantly runs during gameplay, recording the whole distance the player has traveled during that play session.
The ship can only withstand one hit and survive, and on the second hit the game will end. After receiving the first hit, a flying Ambulance will appear from the top of the screen and move toward the bottom. If the player manages to make contact with it, their ship will be repaired.
If the player has less than five lives in stock, they will recover by waiting enough time or by using premium currency, which comes in the form of Sapphires. The game uses the so-called "stamina billing system" that consumes LINE's "hearts" for playing.
