~ Translated description from TwinBee PARADISE in Donburi Shima |
Dr. Mardock (マードック 博士 Mādokku Hakase ), sometimes translated as Dr. Murdoch, is a recurring character in the TwinBee series. He is Madoka's grandfather and a longtime friend of Dr. Cinnamon. Unfortunately, his naive personality and disconnection from the world often make him to cause trouble, up to the point of appearing as an antagonist in some productions, although rarely.
He is voiced by Jōji Yanami.
History[]
Mardock is an eminent scientist from Donburi Island. He loves rabbits, is fairly unhygienic, and lives in a huge mountaintop onto which he has carved a gigantic image of his own likeness. He is a longtime friend of Dr. Cinnamon, another eminent scientist and inventor, and is also the grandfather of Madoka, a sweet girl who manages the popular "Café Fantasian". However, he is also known to be a bit perverted, a trait Madoka remarks every time he's seen humming songs.
He has invented many things for the people of Donburi Island. Some of his most renown contributions include the contraction system for the TwinBee Team and the Mecha-Crab vehicle, a train-like public transportation system that travels all over the island.
Mardock is a peaceful –although a bit extravagant– person, and he often unwittingly causes trouble with his naive personality. One day, he hit his head upon a pole and ended up trying to take over the world, although thanks to his friends he was able to regain his sanity and return being his former self.
Appearance[]
Dr. Mardock has an elongated face accompanied by a similarly long and curved nose. He fashions a long, thick and a bit unkempt mustache which also curves toward the bottom. He is bald on the top of his head but still has thick and curly gray hair (or blue in some artworks) on the sides and back. Noteworthy is that his two frontal teeth are very long and prominent, resembling those of a rabbit. He wears a pair of tea shades (small and round focals), which judging by their thickness are of a considerable high augment.
In regard to his clothing, he wears a suit conjunction, with a buttoned vest over the shirt and the visible chain of what is likely a pocket watch. Over these garments he wears his white but wrinkly lab coat. Adding to his slovenly persona, he doesn't wear any shoes or even socks, and instead he wears a pair of rabbit-themed slippers, with the right one apparently wearing a monocle.
Appearances[]
Video games[]
- Pop'n TwinBee (1993 - SNES): First appearance of Dr. Mardock in the series. Usually a friendly –although a bit extravagant– scientist, one day he hits his head hard and turns temporarily insane, vowing to take over the world as a result. For this end, he creates an army of little buccaneer-like soldiers called the "Acorn Squad" and sets them loose to wreak havoc in Donburi Island. His sweet and lovable granddaughter, Madoka, sends a distress call to the TwinBee Team, which then take on the task; and thanks to their efforts, in the end they defeat the Acorn minions and bring peace back to the island, with Mardock returning to his former self as well (this last outcome can only be seen by completing the game on the highest difficulty setting).
- Jikkyō Oshaberi Parodius (1996 - PS, Saturn): Mardock makes a brief cameo in Stage 3, appearing in a cloud in the background along with his granddaughter, Madoka. In addition, one of the minibosses from the original Super NES version of the game is the "Penguin's Mardock Ship" (modified as "Dr. Warumon's Flagship" in the PlayStation and Saturn versions), which, as evidenced by its name, was presumably created and probably even under command of Dr. Mardock (although only penguins can be seen piloting the ship).
Other media[]
- TwinBee PARADISE (1993-1997 - radio drama): Madoka's grandfather and friends with Dr. Cinnamon. Disconnected from the world, he causes trouble with his naive personality. A bit perverted; Madoka says "When he is humming songs, it's evidence that he's getting fired up".
- Tulip Beach Stories (1998 - OVA): Mardock accompanies Dr. Cinnamon in watching over the kids and their androids while they're taking a break day at Tulip Beach. Tired of such boring task, he proposes Cinnamon to go to a nearby bar to have some food and drinks. The bar happens to be attended by none other than Dr. Warumon, and both Mardock and Cinnamon take advantage of the situation by making him overwork while getting drunk and stuffed in the process.
